A Little Slice of Heaven

IMG_1948When we moved to Florida a little over a year and a half ago, I had some concerns about the summers.  I’d lived in southern Louisiana a million years ago, and the heat there was absolutely unbearable. It wasn’t just hot. It was that sticky suck-in-your-breath-and-hope-some-oxygen-gets-through kind of hot. After leaving there, I swore I’d never live in that kind of climate again.

Fast-forward about 30 years and — who knew? — here I am, living in northeast Florida. Granted, it’s not Louisiana, though from what I can tell on the map, it’s about the same latitude as my previous southern home. But here’s the difference:

Magnolia Tree
Magnolia Tree

We have seasons here! Granted, summer is the longest, whereas in Michigan winter is the longest. But come late fall, things cool down to occasional sweater weather, many trees lose their leaves, the deep and vivid greens fade to a duller hue, and traffic picks up. And I love it. (Well, not the traffic part). The fall brings with it the most beautiful colors in flowers and shrubbery. I have new favorites like Muhly Grass, Bouganvillea, and Bottle Brush trees. The Magnolia trees with their huge white blossoms and deep green leaves are everywhere. And where we live, outdoor activity is encouraged with beautiful walking/bicycle paths that go for miles and miles through the Florida wilderness.

We’ve been here two winters now. The first winter was so mild we were in the ocean every month, and we sort of laughed when we were told this wasn’t exactly typical. This past winter was cooler with water temps going to the low 60’s. That may have prevented us spending as much time in the ocean, but the benefits were seeing Right Whales, northern Gannets, and Florida Manatee.

Kudzu Vine
Grape vines

DSC01961Now it’s spring. And what is my very  favorite part of spring is probably the bane of many Florida natives. What I thought was the Kudzu Vine  is actually just a wild grape vine, but God, I love this thing! I wonder if it’s because it somehow reminds of a beautiful snow that blankets some pretty barren landscaping during northern Michigan winters. This vine dies off quickly at the first early frost. But come spring, the dull green forests start to come alive, and along with that comes the vine, eventually spreading itself over trees and brush until it looks like someone threw a brilliant green blanket over them! I’ve learned it’s not a good thing. I’ve learned that it can kill what it covers because the sun can’t get through. I don’t know too much about that. I just know I really like how it looks, and when I see that, I know that summer will soon be in full bloom. And since we’re near the Atlantic Ocean, we’re finding the heat of the northeast Florida summer is relieved by a beautiful tropical breeze that lends itself to early morning walks and late evening activities.

Yeah, we like it here. We don’t get the thousands of spring-breakers because our winter temps are moderate; that’s a good thing. And while we get plenty of snowbirds, our population doesn’t double in the winter like the southern or gulf areas. We’re more temperate here, slower and somehow calmer than any other area of Florida I’ve been. We got lucky finding this place. Thom’s always saying I should quit telling people how great it is here or we’ll end up like Naples or Lauderdale. But it’s hard not to talk about when we feel so fortunate to have found a little slice of heaven right here on earth.

A Year in a Life

Rick & Sarah
Rick & Sarah

March 3rd, the one-year anniversary of Rick’s passing. How is that possible?  I wrote then that I could not imagine her without him. He’s been gone a year, and I now I believe that she does not go on without him. He’s with her in the eagle she spies circling overhead or the antler she finds in the woods. She talks to him daily on her walks through the familiar trails where they spent so much time together. His occasional ‘visits’ at night help her get through those days of putting one step in front of another until she finds that yet another 24 hours have gone by.

Her new normal keeps her busy with the house, the dogs, her kids, her friends. She runs marathons and cleans like a demon. I talk with her daily and am constantly amazed at the strength she shows when I know just by her voice that maybe today wasn’t a good day.

She even braved her first solo flight and came to Florida for a visit. It was wonderful. We spent time at the beach, on bike rides, and just talking until her short trip was over. She said it was the first time in more than 7 months that she felt ‘normal.’

She’s started reading again. She’s letting go of unrealistic expectations both of herself and others. She’s getting her ‘moxy’ back. She’s beginning to look forward to what might be, what he prepared her for, never letting go of the memory that makes her strong enough to face a future on her own.

Well, not really on her own.

Been awhile.

Yes, it’s been awhile, but now at least I have something to write about.

My momma’s here for a visit!!! Arrived last Thursday evening, so I took last Friday off and we had three days together. Then I had to work 8:30 to 5:00 all week long. I made sure I was all caught up at work, and then I took today (Friday) off so we could have another three-day weekend.

While it’s sunny and beautiful, it’s not going to get much into the 70’s today. Thom was hoping for a beach day, but we’ll have to wait and see. We’re definitely going to go to Blue Springs State Park so she can see Mother Nature at her finest.

Mostly while I’m at work she’s enjoying reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing computer bridge, and occasionally knitting. She loves sitting on the lanai in the sunshine and petting a begging Sadie who will lie on her back until her belly is rubbed.

All in all I think she’s having a good time. I sure hope so. Her visit is going to fly by for me.

Watch for Amy

Amy at “Elephant-fest”

I was up early this morning and got to thinking about Amy. Memories flitted in and out of my mind of “Sparky,” of her amazing outlook on life, her exuberance, her almost frenetic way of diving into a day…any day.

Years ago we had gone together to see the psychic medium John Edward in Akron, Ohio. She was, of course, hoping to connect with her parents who had passed when she was young. We both absolutely believe in the curtain between life and death, living and deceased, and we both absolutely believe that we are visited by those life energies on the other side, oftentimes in ways we don’t recognize immediately but in hindsight are clear as a bell.

I had one such visit from Amy, oddly enough on the day of her memorial service.

I had flown in from Florida and was meeting up with some of my family in the Plymouth area. Staying at my friend Lynzie’s house, I was lucky enough to have use of an extra car. Since the service wasn’t until 6:00 in the evening and my emotions were running the gamut from heartbroken to straining for acceptance, I went to the mall for the ultimate distraction.

After spending about an hour going in and out of stores, I decided I’d see if there were any hair salons. I found three. Checking the prices at each of them, I returned to the first one and asked if there was anyone available for a drop-in hair cut. The gal behind the desk made a quick phone call, then turned to me and said,

“She’s out in the mall, but she’s heading back right now. It’ll be about 5 minutes.”

Perfect.

I sat down and began flipping through magazines hoping against hope this wasn’t one of those one-cut-fits-all establishments. Like most women, I’m picky about my hairdresser — or is it stylist now? — afraid they’ll take too much off, razor cut it or worse. I knew if I saw a 20-something girl with piercings and neck tattoos walk through that door, I was going to bolt. I kept trying to distract myself from the reason I was in town: my Amy, everybody’s Amy, had finally succumbed to the deadly disease she’d been fighting so valiantly for so long. I could not believe I would never see her again, and tears kept burning the backs of my eyes, lumps filling my throat. I was praying whoever was cutting my hair was the silent type.

Finally a gal – a respectable-looking one, at that – walked through the door and up to the counter. After conferring with the receptionist, she looked over at me, approached me, held out her hand and asked,

“Are you Maureen?”

“Yes.”

“Hi. I’m Amy. I’ll be doing your hair today.”

I do love surprises!

Our own ‘mini’ family reunion — Florida style!

And what a great surprise it was! Sunday night I got a text from my sister-in-law Sunny asking me what the weather is supposed to be like next week.  I reply, “Your name and warm!” She says she and Dan both have some extra time off and were considering a road trip. “C’mon down!”  I made some arrangements at work so I could be here when they were, and the next thing I knew I was up pretty much all Monday night texting for updates on their travel progress as they drove straight through from northern Michigan to Florida. Wow! I told Dan this is the last year he can do it. He’s 39.

It was a short trip, but we had a great time with them. Fun restaurants on the beach, sun and fun in the ocean (including the absolute BEST dolphin encounter so far), great conversations and souvenir shopping made the days fly by. They left Thursday afternoon but wisely plan on breaking up the trip home with a stop in Savannah and Monroe.

What a happy girl I was to have my brother and wife visit us. I hope they have a safe drive home, and I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did. [Check out the photos and videos at the links above.]

And then there were THREE!

Meg, Cheyenne, Megan

What a great visit we had with Meg, Cheyenne, and Megan last week! So much fun! Baby turtles! Boogie-boarding! The fort! Surfboarding! Sunning! Yummy dinners! Dolphins! Boat ride! Cards!

And they’re all good sports, easy to have, helpful. Everything was game, and if it didn’t work out due to weather or whatever, that was good, too. Hope to see them all again, ANYTIME!

Cute video in the Videos tab of us all trying to surf.  What a hoot! Meg and I both have battle scars. Cheyenne, though … she’s almost a natural.

It’s those in-between times.

It’s those in-between times that get me. In between holidays. In between visitors. In between jobs. In between paychecks.

I always seem to get a physical letdown when company leaves, especially company I really look forward to having. The anticipation is a wonderful mix of impatience and excitement preparing for visitors. When they finally arrive, the time flies by like something out of Deep Space 9. And then all of a sudden it’s over. They’re gone. And then the letdown. I often don’t get it the next day; it’s generally the day after, and then the day after that. And then before I know it, I’m in that ‘in-between time’ where I know down the road we’re having more visitors, but right now … nada.

So that’s where I am now. We have comp’ny (as my mom would say) coming the second weekend in August. I’ll have to re-arrange work a bit, make sure the house gets cleaned, but not too soon (LOL!), and then begins the anticipation and excitement of one more week…three more days…TOMORROW!

Thank goodness for those times at either end of in-between!
